Did you know that Vitamin D is not really a “vitamin“ in the true sense of the word. True vitamins are necessary elements that our body cannot produce, and that can only be obtained through food.

However, vitamin D can be produced in the body by a photosynthetic process when the skin is exposed to sunshine. Vitamin D is more like a hormone such as estrogen, testosterone or cortisol.

In fact, in 1971, vitamin D was reclassified as a hormone. Scientifically, it is now generally referred to as "vitamin D hormone."

Despite this re-categorization, it is still popularly referred to as "vitamin" D and so we'll follow suit.

Know that Vitamin D is fat soluble. Fat soluble vitamins can be stored to some extent. This could result in vitamin D toxicity or overdose.

Since your body can store vitamin D, the deficiency is pretty rare in developed countries.

Another reason vitamin D deficiency is uncommon is that your body makes it from the sun’s rays. Briefly, skin contains a precursor to vitamin D which is inactive. When sunlight hits the skin, it activates the inactive, or precursor vitamin D.

Many foods provide vitamin D including fatty fish, egg yolks, butter and leafy greens.

The importance of vitamin D in maintaining bone health is well established. New lines of research are looking into the effects of vitamin D on blood pressure, the link between vitamin D and cancer and many other conditions.
